The Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team needed a spark after taking its first loss of the season to Colorado State last Saturday.

It returned to the CU Events Center to welcome a scrappy UTSA Roadrunners squad and sought someone to step up to get it back on track. Junior transfer Barrington Hargress took center stage with 23 points, his most since joining Colorado, and tied his collegiate record with five made 3-pointers.

Hargress shot 9-for-12 from the field while dishing three assists and snagging an additional three rebounds. He tallied 11 points in a disorganized first half from the Buffs but opened the second with eight points in four minutes.

“I feel like I’ve been shooting it well in practice, so I was aggressive,” Hargress said on his game plan.

In the two seasons Hargress spent at UC Riverside, he shot 32% from three. Since donning the black and gold, that metric has shot up to 60%.

“His work ethic,” head coach Tad Boyle said about his increased efficiency from 3. “If you wanted to put his performance tonight in one word, it would be efficient … he scored the ball for us, but he also got other guys involved. To have 23 points on 12 shots, again, it’s a model of consistency.”

“Just staying consistent,” Hargress said about what preparation has led to his success. “[I] understand that there’s a new kind of role that I was going to be in, where I felt I was going to be taking a lot more catch-and-shoots. Just being more prepared with my footwork as far as being in different positions and being able to elevate quickly.”

Hargress has started all 10 games for Colorado this season, averaging 12.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and nearly five assists a night. In a more competitive basketball environment, he’s increased every facet of his shooting, jumping in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and free throw percentage.

Hargress and the Buffs have three more affairs before opening conference play, with Portland State coming to Boulder on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is at 7 p.m., and the game will stream on ESPN+.
