Head coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado football team had an interesting time at CU's 71st fall sports media day.
From celebrating Coach Prime's birthday and his granddaughter’s birth to butting heads with reporters, there was plenty of extracurricular activity to consume. Regarding football questions, however, Sanders and his crew couldn’t stop praising the players and coaching staff to justify their excitement for the season.
“I really wish I could push fast-forward,” Sanders said, “because I’m ready to get going, I’m ready to play.”
His sons Shedeur and Shilo, the Buffaloes’ respective star quarterback and safety, echoed that message shortly after. The pair of brothers explained the team’s confidence comes from the overall improvement in ability and unified energy compared to last year, specifically because of the additions to the coaching staff. Playing on differing sides of the ball, they shared how Pat Shurmur and Robert Livingston, CU’s offensive and defensive coordinators respectively, have created trust and camaraderie throughout the program.
Redshirt freshman cornerback Colton Hood, one of the team’s three Hood family members, explained that the Buffs’ brotherhood has led to this feeling of confidence. He wasn’t talking about playing with his freshman brother Brandon (running back) or his freshman cousin Trenton (linebacker) but the entire program.
“(Playing with family has) been really great. Also, (the program) feels like a family environment,” Hood told Sko Buffs Sports. “We all brothers in here. Everybody likes each other. All the stuff you see on the media, it's not true. Everybody loves each other. We all work hard together. It might get chippy but what families don't fight? We always come back and it's always a brotherhood.”
Across the board, everything appears to be clicking. Every media appearance features all-around praise with a special anticipation for the defense. Shedeur and the backfield reaffirmed their trust in Shurmur and the offensive line. Every player appears to understand that winning is a team effort, something that multiple players and coaches admitted to not possessing all last season.
“It’s a collective,” Shedeur said about who he’s looking forward to playing with. “All those guys, I can’t single one or two out because eventually, you’re going to need every guy in there.”
