On Tuesday morning, Colorado Buffaloes football released their schedule for the 2025 season. Here’s a look into each game, including previous meetings, and insight into how the Buffs stack up with this season’s opponents.

Week 1 (Saturday, Aug. 30): vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

2024 record: (7-6, 5-3 ACC)

Most recent meeting: Never

The Buffaloes will face their 1990 co-National Champions to kick off the season in the first-ever meeting of the two programs on the gridiron. This will be Colorado’s only Power Four opponent in their non-conference schedule this season, and it has the makings for a great matchup. Both teams are conference championship hopefuls, and with the Yellow Jackets being led by star quarterback Haynes King, Colorado’s new-look defense will have their work cut out for them in its season opener.

Week 2 (Saturday, Sept. 6): vs. Delaware Blue Hens

2024 record (FCS): (9-2, 6-2 CAA)

Most recent meeting: Never

CU will face another first-time opponent in Week 2, as the Delaware Blue Hens will travel to Boulder. This will be Delaware’s first season at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, and they will be joining the Conference-USA alongside the Missouri State Bears. In 2024, Delaware finished fourth in its conference, falling to the Richmond Spiders and Villanova Wildcats. The Buffs will likely use this matchup as a tune-up before heading into conference play.

Week 3 (Saturday, Sept. 13): @ Houston Cougars

2024 record: (4-8, 3-6 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 1971 (CU 27-17)

The Buffaloes kick off conference play on the road against the Houston Cougars. Houston was an active team in the transfer portal this offseason, with their biggest acquisition being former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Connor Weigman.

The Cougars hope to improve in conference play this season, and with this being their first time battling the Buffaloes as a member of the Big 12, it will be a unique test to start the year. Colorado will have to deal with the road atmosphere, but with a 4-2 road record in 2024, the Buffs have proven they know how to handle that adversity.

Week 4 (Saturday, Sept. 20): vs. Wyoming Cowboys

2024 record: (3-9, 2-5 MWC)

Most recent meeting: 2009 (CU 24-0)

To close out non-conference play, the Buffs bring another Group of Five opponent to town: the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cowboys had a difficult 2024 overall but managed to pick up a surprising win over the Washington State Cougars just one week removed from a one-score loss to the eventual conference champion Boise State Broncos late in the season.

Head coach Jay Sawvel was active in the portal this offseason, bringing in a total of 21 transfers. While the Cowboys hope for a much improved 2025, a road test against CU is going to be a tall task early on in the year.

Week 5: (Saturday, Sept. 27): vs. BYU Cougars

2024 record: (11-2, 7-2 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2024 Alamo Bowl (BYU 36-14)

Colorado gets an opportunity to avenge its disappointing Alamo Bowl loss to the Cougars from 2024, this time getting the Cougars on their home turf at Folsom Field. BYU will likely be a contender in the Big 12 again this season, with this being a matchup that could be seen again come conference championship week.

The Cougars will be led by a returning Jake Retzlaff at quarterback, creating an interesting battle for either Kaidon Salter or Julian Lewis early in the year.

Week 6: (Saturday, Oct. 4): @ TCU Horned Frogs

2024 record: (9-4, 6-3 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2023 (CU 45-42)

The Buffaloes make their return to Fort Worth this season, the site of the 2023 thriller that introduced the Deion Sanders-led Buffs to the world. This game is slated to be another excellent quarterback matchup, as TCU is led at the position by Josh Hoover, who had a breakout campaign in 2024.

The Horned Frogs also come equipped with a stout defense, which held three of their final four opponents in 2024 below two touchdowns en route to a win in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl.

Week 7: (Saturday, Oct. 11) vs. Iowa State Cyclones

2024 record: (11-3, 7-2 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2010 (CU 34-14)

CU’s difficult start to conference play continues in Week 7, facing last year’s runners-up in the Big 12: the Iowa State Cyclones. It’s been over a decade since these two teams last met, but the programs have a lengthy history with one another. They’ve faced off a total of 65 times dating back to 1946, with the Buffaloes largely dominating the series. They hold a record of 49-15-1 against the Cyclones and would love to reach win number 50 in 2025.

The Big 12 is slated to be one of the most hotly contested conferences next season, with Iowa State being yet another contender to win it. If CU hopes to complete its quest for a conference championship, Iowa State will be one of the hardest hurdles to clear on its path to Arlington.

Week 8: BYE

Week 9: (Saturday, Oct. 25): @ Utah Utes

2024 record: (5-7, 2-7 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2024 (CU 49-24)

The Buffs will be back on the road following their Week 8 bye and will face a familiar opponent from conference play in 2024 in the Utah Utes. Utah struggled mightily in Big 12 play last year but comes into this season with some re-ignited hope following a successful offseason.

The Utes landed former New Mexico Lobos star quarterback Devon Dampier in the portal, adding him to a team filled with young talent. He will be in a position battle with Isaac Wilson, who started six games for the Utes in 2024. Regardless of who wins the job, it will be another interesting quarterback matchup for CU, and with the Utes also sporting an up-and-coming defense, this game will be no walk in the park.

Week 10: (Saturday, Nov. 1): vs. Arizona Wildcats

2024 record: (4-8, 2-7 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2024 (CU 34-7)

Arizona was a team many expected to compete in the Big 12 in 2024 but ultimately disappointed, winning just two of its conference games. The Buffaloes will hope to replicate their performance from last year which saw their second-largest margin of victory during the campaign. That being said, Arizona brings a talented offense to Boulder that can blow games open in a hurry if left unchecked, serving as a difficult test for the Buffs down the stretch of the season.

Week 11: (Saturday, Nov. 8) @ West Virginia Mountaineers

2024 record: (6-7, 5-4 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2009 (WVU 35-24)

This contest will serve as the third-ever meeting between these two teams, with the current series record being split with one win apiece. Despite an up-and-down season in 2024, the Mountaineers made a trip to the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl, which they ultimately lost to the Memphis Tigers by a score of 42-37.

West Virginia is also led by a new head coach in 2025: Rich Rodriguez, whom they hired after a successful stint as the head coach of Jacksonville State from 2022 to 2024. He was one of the more active coaches in the portal this offseason, tallying 30 incoming transfers by the end of January. This new-look Mountaineers team could pose an unexpected challenge to the Buffaloes as they make their trip to Morgantown.

Week 12: BYE

Week 13: (Saturday, Nov. 22) vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

2024 record: (11-3, 7-2 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2023 (CU 27-24)

There is no contest CU would rather hold its ever-crucial home-field advantage than in its last one. The reigning Big 12 champions come to town led by the No. 1-ranked returning quarterback this season (according to On3), Sam Leavitt.

The Sun Devils are on a mission in 2025 after representing the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff this past year. They fell short of the Texas Longhorns in the Peach Bowl, and there’s no way they’d rather avenge the loss than with another trip to the playoff in 2025. Colorado will be facing one of its toughest tests of the year in this game, hoping to cool down the red-hot Devils on a chilly November night in Boulder.

Week 14: (Saturday, Nov. 29) @ Kansas State Wildcats

2024 record: (9-4, 5-4 Big 12)

Most recent meeting: 2024 (KSU 31-28)

In the regular season finale, the Buffs travel to Manhattan, Kansas to face the Kansas State Wildcats. The meeting between these two programs was a nailbiter this past season, with the Cats emerging victorious from Folsom Field by a score of 31-28. K-State returns a largely familiar group to last year, led on offense by star quarterback Avery Johnson and former CU running back Dylan Edwards.

The Wildcats’ rushing offense was dominant against Colorado in 2024, going for a total of 185 yards on 43 carries in the early October matchup. This game will once again test the Buffs’ ability to stop the run, and depending on record in the final week, could prove crucial in determining CU’s postseason outlook.
