Colorado men’s golf take 3rd place at Mark Simpson-CU Invitational

The Colorado Buffaloes men’s golf team competed in three rounds of tournament golf this week, where they took home third place, falling to both Long Beach State and Arkansas State.
The Buffs competed at the Simpson-CU Invitational, located in Boulder, Colorado, at the Boulder Country Club. This course has a slope index of 131, a course rating of 73.1 and totals 7,085 yards. The course serves as a brutal obstacle for competitors with plenty of water hazards, long par-4s and elevated greens that contain multiple bunkers on each side of play.
The team opened the first round of competition poorly. The five designated scorers were each 1-over after the first nine holes but quickly bounced back on the back nine, where the Buffs finished the day with a score of 8-under. This score put the Buffs in third place after the first round, where they would stay for the rest of the tournament.
Brandon Knight, a senior majoring in exploratory studies, led the Buffs for the third time in four tournaments this year. Knight finished the tournament 8-under, which landed him in 4th place individually. He finished with the fourth-best score in school history on a par-70 course. Knight recorded 12 birdies, 39 pars and only three bogeys or worse.
Tyler Long, a sophomore studying business, finished the tournament individually in 11th place after shooting 3-under. Tyler shot a 207 on the final day of competition along with 12 birdies and 34 pars throughout the tournament.
Head coach Roy Edwards expressed frustration with the result of the tournament at home, but understands third place is nothing to be ashamed of.
“Third place in this tournament is not anything other than a really solid result,” Edwards said. “But it's just disappointing because you expect to win the whole thing when you're at home.”
The Buffs will compete in their next tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the first Big 12 match play event starting on October 12. Big 12 match play is a unique style of play that sets up competitors in a head-to-head battle where golfers compete hole-by-hole until someone leads by more holes than there are left to play.
