Colorado’s special teams issues don’t worry Coach Prime
The Colorado Buffaloes blocked a field goal in the final seconds to win a thriller against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets last Thursday. Boo Carter blocked the kick, making the special teams moment the highlight of the game for the Buffs.
Unfortunately for the Buffs, special teams was a disaster leading up to that moment. They allowed a 100-yard kick return touchdown in the first quarter and also had a go-ahead field goal blocked in the fourth quarter. Sanders had words for his special teams this week.
“Special teams need to be special,” Sanders said. “I don't know why we call them special teams if they're not special."
The Buffs failed to make a field goal and only had eight punt return yards and 12 kick return yards the entire game. The Buffs don’t have a special teams coordinator, but Sanders isn’t worried about the mistakes.
"I'm not concerned about those issues. The reason: because that's an easy fix with personnel,” Sanders said. “Some things are schematic. That wasn't schematic. That was personnel. We fixed it with personnel already. Hopefully, you see the results this weekend."
The Special Teams unit does show promise as Carter earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his game-winning field goal block. Sanders thinks he can motivate the rest of the special teams unit to play to their best going forward.
"Very easily. I'm pretty good at that. Understanding the details, getting them to lock in, understanding how vital special teams is- that message has been relayed tremendously,” Sanders said.
The Buffs will look to have a cleaner game on special teams as they take on the Weber State Wildcats on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.(ESPN+).
