The Colorado Buffaloes volleyball team (9-0) defeated the Denver Pioneers (5-3) during the final match of the Buffs Invitational with a score of 3-0. This win marks the seventh game sweep of their season so far.
Middle blocker Cayla Payne and pin attacker Sydney Jordan led the game in most kills (10), with Cayla Payne also leading in blocks (eight).
During the first set, Denver showed ferocity by swiftly getting off the first few points. However, the Buffs quickly evened the score, creating a neck-to-neck battle throughout the set.
CU finally came out on top 25-20, making them 1-0 in the match.
The Buffs maintained their energy into the second set, leading the Pioneers in points the majority of the time. However, Denver was able to close the gap slightly more than in the first set.
“I thought Denver was really a good opponent coming into that,” head coach Jesse Mahoney said postgame. “They have some physical pieces, and they’re running a nice offense, and they pushed us a couple of times.”
Boulder still managed to pull through and clinch the win 25-23, bumping them up to 2-0 for the match.
As the third set began, the Buffs’ energy was higher than ever as they dominated the Pioneers once again. DU couldn’t keep up with the Buffs, allowing them to win the third set 25-15, securing their 3-0 match victory.
“Even though we’re doing well doesn’t mean we can hit a plateau, we have to keep going and keep getting better,” said Cayla Payne about the mindset for the upcoming regular season.
The Buffs’ alternate tourney games consisted of a 3-1 win over Arkansas and a 3-0 win over Toledo.
Colorado plans to carry this momentum all the way to Fort Collins, where they will face the Colorado State Rams (4-4) on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT and streaming on Mountain West Network.
