FRISCO — On the second day of Copper Mountain's first Stifel Copper World Cup since 1976, the world's eyes were watching. With over 21 countries attending and 91 racers, University of Colorado 22-year-old sophomore Ryder Sarchett made his fifth World Cup start Friday morning.
Sarchette, originally from Sun Valley, Idaho, was one of six Team USA skiers who competed in the Men's Giant Slalom. The course, located in the East Village of Copper Mountain, proved difficult, with over 14 participants unable to finish, nearly one-fourth of the field.
Also a former World Junior Champion, Sarchette found himself 3.69 seconds behind first and finished 38th out of 58. This left him out of the second run in Friday’s event. However, Sarchett will likely have another chance to qualify and possibly podium next week at the Birds of Prey World Cup in Beaver Creek.
Ryder was the only Boulder student competing this weekend in both men's and women's events. The next two days will be packed with many more events as the women take center stage both Saturday and Sunday. Notable athletes, including Mikaela Shiffrin, will compete for the Stiefel Copper Mountain World Cup title.
