Derrick White, a Colorado men's basketball alum, NBA Champion and Olympic gold medalist, has a new title to add to his resume.

White is returning to his alma mater as CU’s inaugural President of Basketball Strategy. CU Athletics announced the news Tuesday night and made it official in a press conference Wednesday morning.

Athletic Director Fernando Lovo expressed his excitement for White joining the team.

“He wants to be part of building something lasting here,” Lovo said Wednesday.

White has also agreed to donate $2 million to the men's basketball program. In January 2025, White was added to the CU Wall of Honor, and just a year and a half later, he’s being named to a new team.

“I am passionate about CU,” White said. “I’m excited to learn from Fernando and Coach Boyle and the rest of the coaching staff and do whatever it takes to win as many games as possible.”

Bringing almost a decade of NBA accomplishments, White is confident he can once again be a vital piece for CU. The native of Parker, Colorado, will support coach Tad Boyle and Lovo in roster-building, NIL management and ambassadorship, among several other duties.

“I want to be a resource to the players, I want to be a resource for the coaches,” White said.

During his two seasons playing for the Buffaloes, White led Colorado with 18.1 points, 4.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He was an All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Defensive Team selection in 2017.

He attended the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs before his time in Boulder.
