Fans react to Colorado's beating at hands of Northwestern
The Colorado Buffaloes football team suffered its first setback of the season Saturday night against the Northwestern Wildcats. Social media captured Buffaloes fans' disappointment in tweets, memes, rants and graphics.
Welcome to the first edition of “The Morning After,” where, after every away game going forward, I will analyze some of the best online commentary, with all the overreactions and rollercoaster emotions sprinkled in.
Unfortunately for Colorado, this first video aged like milk. Northwestern student Kamran Nia captured Buffaloes players talking badly about the Wildcats’ Martin Stadium, which is serving as their makeshift stadium during Ryan Field’s construction, before the game. Arrogance never looks good when it isn't backed up on the field. (Explicit clip warning).
Dallas News journalist and Northwestern alum Lia Assimakopoulos made good use of the clip in quote-tweet fashion:
Touche, Lia, touche. For context, Northwestern’s fall 2026 acceptance rate was eight percent according to U.S. News & World Report.
Next up is a tweet from DNVR’s Jake Schwanitz about the Colorado defense. This was sent out in the second quarter when Northwestern made the score 14-0, capitalizing on Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis’ interception.
These concerns aren’t new in the Coach Prime era, especially since the secondary struggled to contain FCS’ Weber State last week. The gaps behind the corners showed during this instance also, as Joseph Himon II found pay dirt untouched.
The Buffaloes struggled all game to contain Himon, and the post above was in response to one of three receiving touchdowns he scored. All three of his receptions went for scores.
Transitioning to the bigger picture, NHL announcer Marc Moser gave his two cents about the loss postgame.
“Bummer” is a pretty solid one-word recap of what transpired. Locked on Buffs X account was feeling the same way:
Colorado couldn’t get out of its own way, even when some drives had bright spots. This is a bummer because the team had another sloppy day filled with penalties. The Buffaloes finished with 9 penalties for 90 yards, only one week after they committed 13 penalties against the Weber State Wildcats. The turnovers and indiscipline made the final score what it was.
Accordingly, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was upset in his postgame press conference when he noticed some players were laughing after the game despite getting their “butts kicked.”
I couldn’t help but think back to the Buffaloes’ 53-7 road loss to the Utah Utes in 2025, when Coach Prime used the same word choice. Although Saturday’s loss being a non-conference game does make the outcome a little less sour, if any silver lining exists.
Colorado has only scored 21 points in two games against power-four opponents. While Brennan Marion is still getting his feet wet as the new offensive coordinator, these stats below paint an ugly picture of the unit’s execution.
To play devil's advocate, there were some positive moments running the ball and putting together long drives before the aforementioned mistakes. Box score watchers might wake up this morning and wonder how the loss was by 34 points. Like “Colorado Clock” said on X, mistakes can just snowball.
The Buffs can't control the social media timeline, but they can control their football. If they don’t let this loss snowball into more, the trash talk will stop being a punchline.
Until then, Buffaloes fans should probably mute a few words this week.
