Isaac Wilson expected to start against Texas Tech
For the second season in a row, the Colorado Buffaloes are facing quarterback uncertainty after former five-star recruit Julian Lewis was benched last Saturday.
Per Matt Zenitz, junior quarterback Isaac Wilson is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes against No. 12 Texas Tech. The younger brother of NFL quarterback Zach Wilson replaced Lewis at halftime against Baylor, throwing for 156 yards and one touchdown.
The news came just two weeks after Lewis threw for 366 yards and was named Big 12 freshman of the week against Weber State. He started the first four games of the season and has averaged183 passing yards and has thrown six touchdowns. Per On3, Lewis has an NIL valuation of $1 million.
Lewis and the Buffs won the first two games of the season, showing promise. But Lewis threw two picks in an embarrassing loss to Northwestern and then only managed to throw for 75 yards before being benched against Baylor.
"I don’t know. I know some people are running with the narrative that it’s already decided. I think I’m the one who makes the decision," Sanders said on Tuesday. "I don’t know where they get that from, but they didn’t get it from me. So, we gonna see how practice plays out this week."
Wilson has experience as a starting quarterback at Utah. He started seven games as a true freshman in 2024 and beat 14th-ranked Oklahoma State, which made him the first freshman signal caller in Utah history to beat a ranked team. If Wilson gets the start against Texas Tech, he will have the chance to beat another top-ranked team as Texas Tech is ranked No. 12 in the AP poll.
"I haven’t talked to JuJu. I’ve talked to Isaac. Kid is excited about the possibilities,” Sanders said. “Excited about, stood up in the meeting and really talked to the team about this and that and challenged them in many ways, so I’m proud of that young man. I really am."
Sanders praised Wilson’s performance in the spring and believes in his ability to perform for Colorado. Wilson was able to create a spark for the offense in the second half against Baylor. In the first half, the offense was had four punts and a turnover with one field goal, but only down 10-3 at half.
After Wilson entered in the second half the Buffs were able to get another field goal and Wilson took them on a 95-yard touchdown drive to tie the game at 13-13 in the fourth.
"Isaac had a great spring, by the way. I don't know if you guys remember that. Isaac had a great, great spring,” Sanders said. “So if he gets the nod, I feel full all out that he's gonna do his thing.”
After two losses in a row, the Buffs will look to get the season back on track and figure out their QB problems as they host the No. 12-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT (FOX).
