Head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders made it clear at his weekly press conference that the Utah transfer would be starting against his old team.

“Isaac is starting,” Sanders said. “You knew darn well that Isaac was starting.”

Wilson got his first start for the Buffaloes before their bye week against the No. 12-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders. He threw for 290 yards and a touchdown, completing  26-for-44 passes. He also threw three interceptions, including a pick-6 in his own end zone.

Sanders mentioned that throwing the ball at that volume won’t be the game plan against the Utes.

“We don't want to throw the ball 40 times,” Sanders said. “We want to keep the ball in between 17 and 24 pass attempts.”

Wilson spent his first two years playing for Utah, appearing in 10 games. In 2024, he started seven games for the Utes and threw for 1,510 yards. He threw 10 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions during his time in Salt Lake City.

Wilson started 13-for-20, throwing a first-half touchdown against the Red Raiders. He finished 13-for-24 with three interceptions in the second half.

He and offensive coordinator Brennan Marion will have their work cut out for them. They face a Utah defense that allows the fewest points in the Big 12, while the Buffs offense has scored the fewest points in the conference.

“Isaac is always up to the task,” Sanders said at his weekly press conference. “This ain't no different week for Isaac.”

The Utes defense allows over 200 passing yards per game, which could allow Wilson to get into a groove if he protects the ball. Still, Utah has the second-most interceptions in the conference with six.

Wilson showed leadership after the Buffs’ loss, shouldering the blame for the 29-7 loss.

“It's got to start with the quarterback room,” Wilson said after the game. “It's got to start with me.”
