Julian Lewis earns Big 12 Freshman of the Week after Weber State performance

Colorado Buffaloes freshman quarterback Julian Lewis had a bit of a shaky start to the season, only completing about half of his passes and finishing with a QBR of 30.0 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. However, after leading the game-winning drive against the Yellow Jackets, it seems like Lewis hasn’t looked back. 

Lewis had four passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and 366 passing yards against the Weber State Wildcats. He went 17-for-23 through the air and didn’t throw a single interception. The Buffs beat the Wildcats 52-21 and Lewis’ performance earned him Big 12 freshman of the week.

Lewis started off the game against the Weber State Wildcats by tossing a 66-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. Lewis didn’t stop there, as he would throw two more 45-plus yard touchdowns before the first quarter was even over. His three touchdown passes in the first quarter set a new record for most passing touchdowns in a quarter by a CU quarterback.

Lewis didn’t even play a full three quarters, but he still finished the game with career highs through the air. 

“Statistically, what was it? 17-of-23, 366, four touchdowns and no picks. I'm happy. I'm happy,” Sanders said of Lewis’ performance.

Lewis helped the Buffs offense rack up 42 points in the first half, and they would score 45 points before Lewis was sat for backup quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne up big. Despite putting up 52 points against Weber State, Lewis believes the Buffs offense hasn’t reached their full potential yet.

“We’re definitely still not where we want to be,” he said.

Lewis and the Buffs will look to keep improving the offense as they face the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday. Kickoff in Evanston, Illinois, is set for 5:30 p.m. MT (FOX).
