LaJohntay Wester; the perfect addition to Colorado's offense

LaJohntay Wester runs the ball in for a touchdown

Back in January, the Colorado Buffaloes welcomed a relatively unknown player to their roster, Florida Atlantic transfer LaJohntay Wester. Most people assumed he would be in a backseat role, but he has become a key factor in the Buffaloes' turnaround year. This week, Wester was able to sit down and discuss his season with the media.

Wester described on Tuesday that when he first arrived in Boulder, head coach Deion Sanders told him, “I brought you [Wester] here to be a leader of that receiver room.” That is exactly what he has done. Whether it is on the field or off, it has become apparent throughout the season that this receiving crew has formed a bond, and Wester has been a big part of that.

The crew seems to connect more each game, and a key factor in that is their mentality. Wester says every week they “go out there and stand on that business.” S.O.B. as some might say, but not just as individuals, but as a unit or “them guys” as Wester would say.

Standing on business is a two-part activity though, and while LaJohntay’s leadership is something the Buffs wanted, his performance on the field is arguably more important.

Luckily for Buff Nation, Wester has done his fair share of standing on business when the pads are on. This season he has already tied his career best in receiving touchdowns with eight in just nine games, and has also tallied 45 receptions for 583 yards.

With all of the injuries the Buffs have had with their offensive weapons this season, Wester has been a rock, bringing his best week in and week out. His valiant effort against Kansas State (five catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns) almost gave the Buffaloes a comeback win in a game where four of their wideouts went down.

From his leadership to his on-field capabilities, Wester has made his presence an impactful one. His efforts have earned him the opportunity to don No. 1 for the Buffs heading forward, which at a new school, he described as a true blessing. As Wester said, “rain, sleet, or snow… we’ve got to come through and make plays,” which is exactly what he has done for the Buffs this season.
