SAN FRANCISCO – The Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team opened their season this past weekend in the Battle In The Bay tournament in California.
Graduate student Aya El Sayed and senior Mila Stanojevic were the two Buffs who made the trip and had a successful weekend to kick off the season.
In doubles, the duo went 2-2, making it to the finals of the consolation bracket, but wound up losing to TCU in a tiebreak at the end. Their victories came against USC and Pepperdine after they were eliminated from the main draw at the hands of Georgia.
In singles, the two combined to win three matches. El Sayed won her opening match in the first round 6-3, 6-2 over the University of Portland. However, she was eliminated in the second round after being broken late in the third set to lose 3-6, 6-3, 5-7 to the No. 1 seed and eventual runner-up Oklahoma State.
Stanojevic breezed through her first match against Virginia Tech with a score of 6-2, 6-0, but the odds quickly turned against her favor. In the second round, she was defeated 0-6, 0-6 by semifinalist USC.
El Sayed was able to defeat the University of Portland in the consolation bracket qualifying round, 4-6, 6-2 (10-5) but her luck ran out shortly after against Oklahoma State.
The Buffs now look ahead to this week’s tournament, the Baylor Invite in Waco, Texas. The three-day competition begins on Friday.
