The Colorado Buffaloes women’s lacrosse team (4-4) hosted the No. 18 Stony Brook Seawolves (4-3) at Prentup Field Thursday night and emerged with momentum to gain a 7-6 win.
The Buffs started strong in the first half when Elena Oh collected four saves. Their energy gave them a massive advantage in this matchup.
The black and gold started a little rocky with a turnover from Teagan Ryan. Both sides of the ball had difficulty gaining a goal as each goalie would protect her net.
With six minutes left in the first quarter, that scoring drought ended. Riley McDonald gained the first goal for the Seawolves. But quickly after Madeline Pisani came in with a goal of her own. Exactly one minute later, Morgan Pence responded with a goal that put CU in the lead 2-1 to end the first quarter.
The intensity was through the roof for the Buffs when Maddie Shoup made her 13th goal of the season to make the score 3-1. But after a quick timeout from CU and a turnover from Lily Assini, SBU’s Riley McDonald came through to tighten the score. After some more back-and-forth, the Buffs won over the half by the score of 5-3.
The Seawolves went scoreless in the third quarter as the Buffaloes' defense showed up. However, the Buffs slowed down offensively within the last 10 minutes of the third quarter, also failing to score.
Entering the final quarter of the matchup. Stony Brook came out with steam. The Seawolves scored two goals within two minutes which pushed the Buffs’ lead to 6-5 with 12:17 left in the matchup. Colorado then pulled the trigger and reset by obtaining three draw controls and another goal by Pisani, marking this her 17th of the season SBU obtained another goal, but the clock ran out, resulting in an upset win for Colorado.
The Buffaloes will have more action this Sunday in a neutral-site matchup located in Houston, Texas. The opening draw is against the University of Dartmouth Big Green (4-3) at 11 a.m. MT. This game is unfortunately not streamed but can be followed by the team's social media and LiveStats.
