After two home games and four full-speed runs, Colorado’s one-year-old live mascot, Ralphie VII, has officially been nicknamed “Brandy.” Inspired by the 1972 hit “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass, a press release from school officials notes that Ralphie’s handlers saw an inclination and energy the 700-pound buffalo had towards the song.
Each Ralphie earns her name after making her debut at Folsom Field, a ritual that dates back nearly six decades. The Ralphie Live Mascot Program lets handlers pick a nickname that reflects both personality and tradition, and “Brandy” continues the long line of spirited, often spirit-themed, names.
Previous Ralphies have been called Moonshine (II), Tequila (III), Rowdy (IV), Blackout (V), and Ember (VI) — a mix of strength, wit, and a touch of Boulder charm.
Brandy isn’t just another nod to that pattern. According to CU Athletics, the handlers say she “strongly identifies with the lyrics,” a playful reference to the song’s story of a devoted barmaid who never stops showing up for those she loves.
Brandy made her first run at Folsom Field on Sept. 20 during Colorado’s family weekend matchup against Wyoming. From the moment the gates opened, it was clear she was ready for the spotlight. Her hooves thundered onto the field as she sprinted with speed and precision through the iconic horseshoe route, quickly becoming a fan favorite
Her enthusiasm was a noticeable change from her predecessor, Ralphie VI (Ember), who retired after showing disinterest in the high-speed runs that have long defined the gameday tradition.
Brandy’s story is just beginning, but she’s already made her mark. As she leads the Buffs onto the field against Iowa State this weekend, it won’t just be another Ralphie run — it’ll be a new chapter in a tradition that characterizes Colorado pride.
Because in Boulder, legends don’t just walk — They run.
