HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. –The Colorado Buffaloes women’s golf team followed up its win at the Colonel Wollenberg Classic with a second-place finish at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The squad finished the tournament hosted by Denver University 11 strokes under par, tied with the Texas State Bobcats. Vanderbilt took home hardware in Highlands Ranch, shooting 24-under. Three of the Commodores’ quintet finished inside the top 4 individuals, including freshman Elizabeth Rudisill, who took home the individual title (-10).
Maya McVey continued to stand out as the Buffs’ best golfer. The junior transfer shot 4-under in the first round and 2-under in the third round. McVey finished 5-under and tied for fifth, her second straight top-5 finish.
Carolyn Fuller was in a tie for first on the leaderboard after the opening round. The junior’s 7-under performance on Friday matched her career-best round, a feat she captured last tournament.
Fuller finished at 1-under two weeks ago, despite her magnificent round. Similarly, she finished at 2-under in this one, after scoring 3-over and 2-over in her final two rounds. The disappointing finish landed Fuller in eighth individually.
Sophomore Ellen O’Shaugnessy competed at the tournament as an individual. She also played spectacularly in the first round, shooting 6-under and placing tied for third on the day. O’Shaugnessy’s final two rounds were identical to Fuller’s, shooting 5-over combined. She finished 1-under and tied for 13th individually.
Vanessa Ngo tied for 17th with a score of 1-over. The California native struggled in the early rounds, shooting 1-over and 3-over to start the tournament. Ngo got into a groove in the final round, shooting 3-under with the help of an eagle on the 14th hole.
Freshmen Teemapat Pateetin and Brenna Higgins both finished outside the top-25. Pateetin put up two solid rounds, 1-under and 2-under, but an abysmal second round of 7-over tanked her final score (+4).
Higgins, on the other hand, played well in the second round (-2), but stumbled in the first and third rounds, combining for 8-over. The Centennial, Colorado native finished behind all her teammates at 6-over.
Consistency is the Buffs’ biggest enemy. Returners O’Shaugnessy and Fuller both had amazing first rounds that could have propelled the Buffs into a competition with Texas State for the title, but inconsistencies plagued the black and gold in the final two rounds.
A second-place finish is nothing to hang your head about, yet Colorado still has plenty of room to grow before hitting its full potential.
The Buffs will head to Hawaii to compete in the Nanea Invitational starting on Monday, Oct. 27.
