BOULDER– The Colorado Buffaloes (2-0) defeated the Le Moyne Dolphins in a straightforward 97-38 contest in the Buffs’ home opener.
Senior guard Frida Formann and graduate student guard Maddie Nolan both led the Buffs with 15 points, while senior guard Lytoya Baker led the scoring charge for the Dolphins with 18 points.
Following the reveal of the 2023 addition to their Sweet 16 banner, Colorado appeared caught up in the moment. The first quarter started off quite slow for the Buffs, who were unable to score for the first minute and a half of game time. However, once they got the lid off of the basket, they never looked back.
The first quarter ended 26-6, and the second quarter did not look all too different for the black and gold.
Jadyn Atchison led the way for Colorado in the second quarter with eight points, while the Buffs extended their lead over the Dolphins at 52-21 to close out the opening half.
The Boulder squad opened up the second half just as well as they closed out the first, outscoring the Dewitt, New York team 27-9 in the quarter. Le Moyne saw a similar volume of shots compared to Colorado in the third quarter, contrary to the first half where the Buffs put up 40 attempts whereas Le Moyne could only manage 19. However, the Dolphins only managed to connect on 30.8% of their 13 shots while the Buffs made an astounding 60.2% of their 16.
This trend continued into the fourth and final quarter, where the black and gold had a field goal percentage of over double that of the green and white Dolphins (44%-20%).
The Buffs were able to coast to victory and close out the game, not giving up more than 15 points in a single quarter.
“We are trying to be excellent in everything we do,” said Colorado head coach JR Payne when asked about the expectations that could come with a potential top 10 ranking, “we hold ourselves to a really high standard.
