Colorado dominates Adams State in exhibition game, scoring 100 points

The Buffs faced the Adams State Grizzlies in an exhibition on Tuesday, winning 100-39.
Tulane transfer sophomore Mecailin Marshall finished her first game with 20 points. Sophomore forward Logyn Greer had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams played a chippy first quarter, finishing with five team fouls and multiple trips to the free-throw line. Colorado capitalized early, taking an 11-5 lead four minutes in and finishing the first up 26-12.
Colorado’s early lead came from a whopping 13 points from Marshall in the first quarter and a last-second 3-pointer from way behind the arc, giving the Buffs momentum heading into the second.
The Buffs outscored Adams State 7-2 in the first three minutes of the second and finished the first half up 45-21. The Buffs continued their offensive aggression in the third by outscoring the Grizzlies 27-5 and 28-7 in the 4th quarter.
Greer dominated the second half, hitting three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and grabbing rebounds off missed free throws, creating opportunities Adams State wasn't prepared for.
The 6-foot-4 Forward, Sophie Zadel, also had a strong second half, scoring 11 of Colorado’s 27 points in the third and helping the team finish the day by outscoring the Grizzlies 20-5 during the last five minutes of play.
While most of the conversation focused on the offense, head coach JR Payne emphasized the importance of Colorado’s defense, specifically their 3-2 zone.
This zone held the Grizzlies to 39 total points, 12 in the second half, and forced 12 steals.
“I think you know for the 11 years that I have been here, defense has always been our hallmark,” Payne said. “It’s something we can always rely on despite the fact we’ve never had the best shooters, biggest post players, but we’ve always been very tough defensively, and this year we’ve really embraced that mentality.”
Colorado faces off against Morgan State next Wednesday, Nov. 4, in its first regular-season game. Tip-off at the CU Events Center is set for 6 p.m. MT, and ESPN+ will also stream the game.
