Colorado women’s golf finishes 13th at Red Sky Classic
The Colorado Buffaloes women’s golf team delivered strong performances on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as they played at the Red Sky Golf Course located in Wolcott, Colorado. The Buffs shot an 11-under as they took 13th place, bouncing back from a brutal start to the opening round, where they finished Monday’s tournament 14 over par.
The Red Sky Golf Course features two 18-hole courses that are both located just above 7,000 feet above sea level. The Fazio course was designed by Tom Fazio in 2002 and has a 69.3 rating and 130 slope, while The Norman course was designed by Greg Norman and features a 75.8 rating and 154 slope. The courses are best known for their two-tiered green surfaces and rapid elevation changes that can tire out competitors quickly.
The women started the tournament in disastrous fashion, where they started the first 7 holes with 11 bogeys or worse. This stagnation continued as the Buffs finished in 18th place after the first day.
Tuesday became crucial for the team’s success as it shot a six-under par, improving its first round by 20 strokes. The momentum built up from Tuesday carried onto the final round as the Buffs finished the tournament strong and shot a five-under.
Brenna Higgins, a sophomore majoring in communications, put the squad on her back by finishing as Colorado’s low 54-hole scorer for the first two days. This career milestone started when Higgins entered the final round with two birdies and consecutive pars to end her time in the tournament.
Maya McVey, a senior majoring in accounting, finished as Colorado’s top golfer for the tournament and shot an even 72 in all three rounds. In the final round, McVey shot an eagle on the 274-yard par-four third hole, which bought her some leeway in clutch time.
The Buffs will have their next tournament from October 2-4, where they will compete in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the Denver Pioneers’ golf club in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
