The Colorado track and field team has wrapped up its biggest weekend of the season. The team split its forces, sending most of the distance team to compete at Boston University while the others competed at home in the Colorado Invitational.

The distance team hit their stride this weekend, running at sea level for the first time this year alongside runners at high school, collegiate, and semi-pro levels. Nine out of the 10 athletes recorded personal bests, including Isaiah Givens, who now owns one of the 10 fastest 3,000-meter times in college this season.

The women ran on Friday. Jessie Secor set a personal best in the 3,000-meter with a time of 9:02:81. Secor placed 18th out of 167 runners. That time puts her within the top 10 3,000-meter performances in CU history. Katja Baurele also raced her way into a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:41.36. Her best mile yet secured the No. 27 spot out of 197 runners.

The eight men’s runners in Boston competed in the 3,000-meter race, and they all placed in the top 35 out of 232. Givens led the Buffs, as his time of 7:45.01 earned him the No. 5 spot in the race, but he was the fastest collegiate runner there. The sophomore now owns both the eighth-best time in college and the second-best time in CU history. The rest of the team also excelled.

  • Chris Cherry (Ninth, 7:48.03)

  • Kole Mathison (19th, 7:52.66)

  • Grady Rauba (20th, 7:52.66)

  • Lukas Haug (25th, 7:56.08)

  • Charles Robinson (29th, 7:57.53)

  • Wilson George (30th, 7:58.15)

  • Ethan Edgemont (34th, 8:00.17)

The distance team will get to run at sea level again this upcoming weekend back in Boston.

Back in Boulder, the rest of the running team had themselves a day. They recorded 15 personal bests and several were top finishers.

The women’s hurdlers started the day out strong. Jada Green kept up her exceptional indoor season, taking first in the final with an 8.71 time. Eva Bruce was right behind her with an 8.80. Allie Routledge’s personal best of 9.00 was good for sixth place. Riley Burkey placed 15th overall and set a personal best at 9.42.

Johnny Homsy (6.90) and Cade Vanhout (6.95) had the third and fifth-best times in the 60-meter dash.

Danny Tragarz took second and broke his personal best in the 400-meter with a time of 47.36. Cole Romig finished fifth not even a second later at 47.93, a new record for him as well. AJ Galvicic took sixth in his 400-meter collegiate debut, and Nick Gehring rounded them out at ninth.

Abby Miller also made her collegiate debut in the event, and it was good enough for the second spot (but was the top collegiate finisher). Fellow freshman Aubrey Leneweaver took third as she finished with nearly identical times, 55.95 and 55.96.

The only Buffalo in the top 12 in the 800-meter was Will Houser, who also had a personal best at 1:55.04.

Homsy (21.95) did well for the men in the 200-meter with the fifth-best time. Freshman Myla Wilkes has been impressive all season and continued this weekend, taking first again in the women’s 200-meter dash. This time, she set a personal best of 24.10.

Two runners broke personal records in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Caroline Mehlhorn ran a 9:58.67, finishing ninth. Sierra Parks ran a 10:44.61.

To end the Colorado Invitational, two 4x400 teams took a pair of first-place finishes. The men’s team consisting of Galvicic, Romig, Gehrig, and Tragarz set a season best with a 3:11.65 run, four seconds faster than their last run. The women’s team consisted of Miller, Leneweaver, Pollak, and Wiles. In their first race together, they ran a 3:47.49.

In the field events on Friday, CU claimed event wins in the women’s weight throw and high jump to highlight a day of personal bests.

Amanda Opp's 17.01-meter throw was the best at the meet and her best this season in the weight throw.

The Buffs claimed the top five spots in the women’s high jump. Riley Ward was the one to take first with her best jump yet at 1.76 meters. Ava Goetz’s highest jump yet matched Routledge at 1.71 meters. Burkey and Bruce filled the rest of the top five with their respective 1.61 and 1.56-meter jumps.

Drake Miller jumped a personal-high 4.85 meters and landed on the second spot of the podium in the pole vault. This jump gives him the eighth-best jump in CU history.

The Buffs are looking like the best versions of themselves heading into the last month of the indoor season. The team will travel to Boston University to compete this upcoming weekend.
