What better way is there to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a dominating 30-point win? The Colorado Buffaloes (18-8, Big 12 9-5) did just that Saturday against the BYU Cougars (17-9, Big 12 6-8), winning 76-46.
Senior forward Anaëlle Dutat led all scorers with a career-high 19 points and recorded 10 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double and sixth of the season.
Senior forward Jade Masagayo scored 15 points on 63% shooting and grabbed eight boards. Junior guard Desiree Wooten stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Colorado out-rebounded BYU by 24, 50-26, its largest margin this season. It was the largest since March 3, 2025, when CU out-rebounded Houston by 26.
That rebounding guided Colorado through early shooting woes, including five offensive boards through the first five minutes of the game.
The Buffs’ defense was electric, limiting the Cougars to just 25% shooting in the first quarter while forcing five steals, pushing their lead to 17-8 after the first frame.
Masagayo led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds in just 10 minutes of on-court action as Colorado’s lead swelled to 20, 32-12.
The Buffs’ defense continued to suffocate, disrupting shots at the rim and holding BYU to just 18 points in the first half.
Dutat, forward Tabitha Betson and Masagayo combined for 28 of Colorado’s 41 points as it went into the locker room ahead 41-18.
Colorado outrebounded the Cougars 31-10, including 14 offensive rebounds.
Wooten’s eight points and Dutat’s six in the third quarter helped the Buffs cruise out to a 58-31 lead over the Cougars.
Masagayo and Wooten combined for 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Buffs fended off any drama.
“I knew we were going to play well because we were very focused and we knew that this was a really important game for us,” head coach JR Payne said. “But I did not necessarily see that coming.”
Bringing down 50 boards helped keep Colorado competitive, even through poor shooting stretches.
“That was like one of our offensive keys,” Dutat said. “Really hit the glass really hard, get second chance points.”
Colorado outscored BYU 17-2 on second-chance points. Dutat’s five offensive boards helped lift the Buffs to the largest rebounding margin this season.
“AD playing the way she is right now, being aggressive on the glass, making good plays, great cuts, all that stuff opens things up for other people,” Payne said.
Colorado took a 27-point lead into the fourth quarter, the first time they’ve taken a lead more than 10 points into the final frame since Dec. 31.
“I feel like we get into situations where sometimes we can play down to who we're playing against,” Betson said. “I think today was a huge growth for us because we didn't do that.”
Betson finished with 11 points, including shooting 60% on 3s.
Colorado’s next game will be against the Arizona Wildcats (11-14, Big 12 2-12) in Tucson, Arizona, on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. MT (ESPN+) as the Buffs look to follow up on their 75-56 win over the Wildcats in December.
