On Monday, Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
The two-way star had nine receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the Buffs’ 34-23 win over Cincinnati last Saturday. Hunter also won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week in Week 3, with five tackles, one interception, and a pass breakup in a dominant 28-9 win over Colorado State.
Hunter is the only player in Big 12 conference history to earn a player of the week honor on both sides of the ball. These awards continue to solidify the senior’s historic season. Hunter currently has played 895 snaps in eight games and has cleared 100 snaps in six games.
So far this season, the senior has had 60 catches for 757 yards, eight touchdown catches, 21 total tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, seven pass deflections, and one forced fumble. Hunter is also the only Heisman candidate to be both an offensive and defensive player of the week.
“Travis is the best college football player in the country,” head coach Deion Sanders said after the Buffs’ win over Cincinnati. “We all know that. Why are we even deliberating over that? … Somebody needs to say, what is the criteria for that prestigious award? Because we’re looking for the best college football player ever. There has never been a Travis Hunter, ever. And I’m up here saying that.”
Sanders’s statement of the Heisman race shares the opinion of many college football fans, especially Colorado Buffaloes fans. With four games to play for the remainder of Colorado’s season, it should be interesting to see if Hunter could possibly double up on DPTOW and OPTOW.
