On Wednesday night, the Colorado Buffaloes added to their already overloaded roster with the commitment of Australian guard Alexander Dickeson and forward Goc Malual on Monday, putting the Buffs two spots over the scholarship limit of 15. The oversigning means Colorado is anticipating at least two players to enter the transfer portal once it opens on April 7.
Dickeson and Malual were teammates for Australia’s youth national team in the 2025 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup. Malual averaged four points and five rebounds, and the 18-year-old guard averaged five points, four rebounds and two assists over the seven-game tournament.
Surprisingly, that tournament was the first time the two were teammates, despite both competing for Australia in other international events.
Malual played for Australia in the 2024 FIBA U18 Asia Cup and the 2023 FIBA U17 Oceania Championship, while Dickeson played for Australia in the 2024 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup and the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship.
Dickeson and Malual join a long list of players on Tad Boyle’s squad who have international experience. Guard Felix Kossaras, center Leonardo Van Elswyk, forwards Alon Michaeli and Sebastian Rancik have competed in international tournaments or played professionally.
Malual currently plays for the Sydney Kings in the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia. In nine games this season, he averages 1.9 points and one rebound per game.
The 6-foot-9 forward brings size and length to a Colorado defense that was 295th out of 361 teams in Division I basketball in opponent field goal percentage (46.3 percent) and 315th in scoring defense (79.4 points) this season.
Offensively, Dickeson’s 6-foot-4 stature brings a different guard archetype to the Buffs roster, which does not have a player listed between 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-5. He has two great guards to learn different game styles from next season in Isaiah Johnson and Barrington Hargress, depending on the results of the transfer portal.
Another connection the two might have is with assistant coach Nate Tomlinson, who is from Australia and played for the Melbourne United in the NBL.
Before Boyle and his staff figure out Colorado’s overloaded roster situation, the Buffs have a matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners (19-15, 7-11 SEC) in the first round of the College Basketball Crown on April 1 at 6 p.m. MT (FS1).
